Makalei Golf Club overlooks the Big Island’s Kona-Kohala Coast from the lower
slopes of Hualalai, the island’s third highest mountain. Recently voted as the
Best Golf Course in West Hawaii by readers of West Hawaii Today. Makalei is one
of only five in the state to feature Bentgrass greens, the “grainless”
alternative to Hawaii’s more common Bermuda putting surfaces. Makalei is a cool,
scenic, woodland alternative to the island’s many coastal golf course
experiences. Its elevations range from approximately 1,800 feet to 2,850 feet,
offering challenging play, panoramic coastal views, as well as nesting areas for
pheasants, turkeys, and other wildlife. Over 100 wild peacocks roam the course,
including one rare white female. Distinctive features on the course include lava
tubes, cinder cones and a stone wall dating back more than 100 years that
traverses the length of the course.
